Delivering 40 years of Innovation with Dr. Edmund Rhett

Congratulations are in order for our own Dr. Edmund Rhett, who celebrates 40 years in practice this September. Dr. Rhett has seen many changes in the medical field over the years, but “Good conscientious medicine is still good medicine,” he states.

After graduating from the University of the South, Sewanee, TN with a degree in biology, Dr. Rhett received his medical degree from The Medical College of Georgia.  Four decades ago, Dr. Rhett started the first OB/GYN practice in Mt. Pleasant. He took this practice from a small, three person group to the largest one of its kind in the area, Lowcountry OB/GYN.   An estimated 7,000 babies delivered later, Dr. Rhett stepped away from obstetrics and opened Rhett Women’s Center (RWC), a full-service gynecology office specializing in the comprehensive treatment of women of all ages from adolescence to menopause. Rhett Women’s Center is a product of his vision to provide women a practice dedicated to their needs beyond pregnancy with a respite from wait times. The very women who entrusted Dr. Rhett with their care through conception have followed him to RWC.

Dr. Rhett shares one of the biggest changes he has seen through his 40 years in the field, “What we know about hormones now and the relationship between hormones, nutrition and good health is more prevalent than when I first started. Today, we spend time with women and customize their treatment plans to address their symptoms comprehensively.” Because of this, RWC offers Bioidentical Hormone Optimization, in which Dr. Rhett and the RWC providers follow a protocol believed to be the most current and scientifically based method of BHRT. In addition, Dr. Rhett has developed a highly effective weight loss program along with full service gynecology services, as well as the most advanced aesthetic treatments. RWC continues to provide the only fully accredited gynecology surgery center in the area. Women enjoy a safe place to treat abnormal periods for a tenth of the price of the same procedure in the hospital.

Dr. Rhett continues to keep up with the studies and clinical trials in his specialty and beyond. Through the years he has been involved in various medical organizations. Dr. Rhett is a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, having been board certified since 1979. He was on the founding board of East Cooper Hospital, and made many appearances at local functions, as well as being on radio and television, speaking on the latest healthcare trends in his field. Dr. Rhett has privileges at Roper St. Francis and East Cooper Medical Center. He was an original member of the Southern Clinical Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a select group dedicated solely to the continuing education of its members.

Dr. Rhett has long been a patient favorite since opening his doors. 40 years later, he still loves his profession. He explains, “Every day I get the chance to make someone healthier and feel better.”
