Hormone Help! Understanding BHRT

The amount of information regarding BHRT can be overwhelming. Today’s educated patients spend a great deal of time researching BHRT.

Gene Blake, NP of Rhett Women’s Center suggests Bio-Identical Hormones for those women that are feeling sluggish, struggling to lose weight and just don’t feel like themselves.

Hormones are powerful proteins in our bodies that control the way a person feels. When there are deficiencies in hormone levels such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone or thyroid, they may experience a variety of negative symptoms…including: headache, weight gain, anxiety, depression, hair loss, headaches, joint pain, bloating, insomnia, decreased libido, irritability, PMS, and the list goes on. Replacing these hormones that are known to be deficient can dramatically enhance a patient’s overall wellbeing. By optimizing hormone levels, patients can sleep well and feel energized when they wake up in the morning; they will see positive results from efforts to lose weight; and can increase clarity and patience. Not to mention patients can be excited about having sex again!

Pellets are an option for delivery of hormone therapy. Implantation of pellets containing estrogen and/or testosterone is an option for many women. Pellets are small rice-sized implants that are placed by a health care provider just under the skin of the upper buttock. The pellets release a steady, constant level of hormone (estrogen and/or testosterone) over the course of a 3-4 month period. The pellet dose is individualized based on lab tests and is monitored throughout the duration of therapy. Using pellet therapy patients can experience relief of symptoms such as increased energy level, improved sleep patterns, reduction of hot flashes and mood stability in as soon as two weeks. Two full months of therapy can result in increased libido and improvement of any urinary issues. Patients undergoing long term therapy will notice a decrease in body fat, improved muscle mass and improvement of cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
